After a hectic week for Affliction Entertainment, the clothing powerhouse-turned-fight organization will now cease promoting MMA cards to become an official sponsor of the Ultimate Fighting Championship.
The news comes courtesy of a report by Kevin Iole of Yahoo Sports!
According to the article, Affliction will no longer hold any events in order to be able to rejoin the UFC as an apparel sponsor.
Affliction-branded clothing was banned from the UFC when the company decided to pursue MMA promotion last year, hence Affliction's first pay-per-view being appropriately named, "Banned."
On Friday morning, Josh Gross of SI.com was first to report that Affliction had cancelled its entire show scheduled for Aug. 1 at the Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif.
After searching for an opponent for WAMMA heavyweight champion Fedor Emelianenko following Josh Barnett's positive steroid test, names like Brett Rogers, Jeff Monson, Vitor Belfort and Bobby Lashley were thrown around as potential replacements.
Affliction Entertainment released an official statement this afternoon declaring that no suitable replacement could be found, one that would live up to the standards previously set by the promotion.
Affliction was reportedly working on a merger with the California-based Strikeforce promotion within the last two days, but negotiations eventually fell through.
It is presently unknown whether the newfound Affliction-UFC alliance will involve sending fighters under Affliction contract to the UFC.
According to Iole, Affliction approached the UFC shortly after UFC 100 to propose transferring all Affliction contracts to the UFC in exchange for the opportunity to once again sponsor the organization. UFC President Dana White initially turned down the offer.
The Fight Network will have more on this story as it develops.
